View the adjacent new picnic ground!   $10.00/person, $25/family admission includes: grilled hot dogs and hamburgers, soft drinks and sangria! Siege to Screen--an Evening with Courtney Hunt

Siege to Screen Turning a Civil War diary entry into a prize-winning film   Join Courtney Hunt for an evening of Civil War talk and a screening of her Award Winning Civil War short ALTHEA FAUGHT, followed by a discussion of the diary entry that inspired the movie...and a peek at Courtney’s recent work. Courtney Hunt's first feature film, FROZEN RIVER, starring Melissa Leo, won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival and was released by Sony Pictures Classics in August of 2008. The film received widespread critical acclaim for its social realism and airtight suspense. Courtney was awarded Best First Film by the New York Film Critics Circle, and Best Debut Director by the National Board of Review. In 2009, Courtney was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for FROZEN RIVER, and her lead actress, Melissa Leo was nominated for Best Actress. She holds a MFA from Columbia University where her thesis film, ALTHEA FAUGHT, a Civil War short, was awarded the New Line prize and was sold to PBS.  Her latest feature film, THE WHOLE TRUTH, a courtroom thriller starring Keanu Reeves and Renee Zellweger, will be released in 2016. Movie Night and Dinner Doors open at 5:30 p.m. Dinner at 6:00 Movie at 7:00   MOVIE: Cantankerous old buzzard Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) can barely walk down the street of his home in Billings, Montana without stopping for a drink. So when Woody receives a sweepstakes notice in the mail and insists on making a 750-mile trip to Lincoln, Nebraska to collect his prize, it falls to baffled son David (Will Forte) to accompany him. During a stop in their Nebraska hometown, word gets out about Woody's fortune, first making him a hero, then later, the target of predatory people.   Dern, as the cantankerous yet harmless Woody, delivers a stirring performance, despite the fact that the man he’s playing is not entirely there. Woody is convincingly fragile and unstoppable all at once . Bring at least three dozen cookies made from your favorite cookie recipe. If you like, also bring copies of your recipe to share with other attendees. Everyone will exchange cookies so that we all go home with several kinds! We'll supply coffee, cups, and conversation.

Annual Holiday Tree-lighting start with Pot Luck Party at the home of Louise Wallace 2714 County Route 9 (intersection of County Route 9 and New Concord Road) 4 pm to 6 pm We ask you to bring side dishes, or savories Turkey, Ham and Beverages will be provided   followed by Carolling and Tree Lighting On the New Concord Green Remember to bring flashlights, safety reflectors and warm clothing. Illustrated Lecture: the History of Plastic Surgery

  The History of Plastic Surgery The Surprisingly-long Saga that Led To a Modern Restorative Specialty   Dr. Richard Karpinski was raised in Philadelphia, and graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1971. After completing a 6-year general surgery training at Boston City Hospital (Harvard Surgical Service) and The New England Deaconess Hospital, he practiced as a general surgeon for two years in the United States Air Force, stationed at Strategic Air Command (SAC) headquarters near Omaha, and received his general surgery certification from the American Board of Surgery (ABS) during that time. At the end of the Air Force commitment, Dr. Karpinski moved to New York with his family, to train in Plastic Surgery at the NYU Institute of Reconstructive Plastic Surgery. He entered private practice in 1981, affiliated principally with St.Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital, and was board certified in Plastic Surgery in 1983. Dr. Karpinski has been involved in teaching from his undergraduate years onward: he has taught anatomy, surgery and computer programming to undergraduates, medical students and surgical trainees. Over the years, he has had teaching affiliations with Harvard University, Creighton University, University of Aberdeen (Scotland), and for many years held a faculty appointment at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S). He is a New Concord neighbor.   The presentation will be in conjunction with a Potluck Cocktail Party You're encouraged to contribute Hors d'oeuvre or a plate of "finger food" to share. Six Feet Under An Idiosyncratic Look at American Graveyards and Funeral Customs David Dashiell is returning as a guest speaker to The Society of New Concord, bringing to life his bone-chilling, spooky insights and discoveries about burials through the ages. David has a Master of Architectural History degree from the University of Virginia, and has enjoyed a 30-year career in history museums in Philadelphia and the Berkshires. In recent years he has focused on photography of art and architecture, and worked for a time as a photographer at the Mead Art Museum in Amherst, Massachusetts. David's current day job is in the development office of Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, Massachusetts.   The presentation will be in conjunction with a Potluck Cocktail Party There is no admission fee, but you're encouraged to contribute Hors d'oeuvre or a plate of "finger food" to share.
